Aims and Objectives

Aims of English Language curriculum

The principal aim of English language curriculum is to provide every student with the opportunity:

(1) to develop the ability to carry out successfully certain tasks and communicative transactions through the medium of English;

(2) to expand and strengthen their English proficiency in order to prepare themselves for adult life or further education or both;

(3) to develop an interest in and an appreciation for recreational as well as cultural activities in which English is used as the medium of communication;

(4) to develop their abilities to think independently, logically, critically, analytically and imaginatively.


Objectives in English Language Teaching

(1) to adopt a communication and task-based approach in teaching;

(2) to integrate four skills, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking, in language teaching;

(3) to introduce authentic materials or texts for meaningful language work;

(4) to build in grammar patterns in the context of activities of listening, speaking, reading and writing;

(5) to encourage the students to elaborate, illustrate, and explain ideas to concede or refute counter-arguments through activities and guidance;

(6) to encourage students to participate in English-related extra-curricular activities such as debates, essay , speech contests, drama, & project displays etc. within or outside school;

(7) to develop students’ independence in learning by self-access programmes, group work, pair work, projects, interviews or other activities;

(8) to foster a reading and listening habit of and expose the students to a variety of written and spoken English such as novels, short stories, plays, poems, non-fiction books, newspapers, magazines, films and videos, radio and television;

(9) to arouse the students’ interest and boost their confidence in English by various activities and games through the medium of English.
